In 2011, we noticed a lot of unsupervised youth hanging around the neighborhood in buffalo. A neighborhood which was in decay, experienced high levels of poverty, and was full of vacant lots. So we started an afterschool program to foster productive focus and build community within our youth. In 2015, that endeavor grew into a youth employment program that gives young people a sense of purpose and occupational skills as they grow into adulthood.
At the outset, we were focused primarily on refuges, and since then it's become a diverse mix of individuals from the community, from our church, and even from around the United States through our paid internships.
Our urban farm has expanded to 15 lots and is a living parable of redemption where flourishing crops and a vibrant community exist on what was previously vacant or abandoned property. We've combined our love for growing things with stories of redemption in the lives the youth we work with, allowing Jesus to multiply and meet the needs of the community around us.
We recognize that transforming the physical environment creates hope. Purpose and dignity is brought to our neighborhood as kids grow up next to a farm, learn language, education, and job skills while doing an activity that is familiar.
In addition to the opportunities and resources we provide, our inner city farmhouse has become a community center for family gatherings, celebrations, and more.
5 Loaves Farm is an amazing way for young adults to expand their perspective and learn about the urban context. It's an opportunity for young christians to get exposed to the challenges many people in America face. Adults and young adults are invited to come serve in our Buffalo Urban Mission Partnership as paid interns.
